Some Remain parties and politicians appear to misunderstand how proportional representation works in the European elections. They seem to think that the voting system means that it’s impossible to split the Remain vote, meaning tactical lists are not necessary.
This is incorrect.
But the misunderstanding has meant that an approach by LibDems leader, Sir Vince Cable, to Change UK and the Greens that they should unite to fight the European parliament elections together has been rebuffed.
A Change UK MP is reported to have explained to a journalist about the European elections,
“The beauty of the system means that it’s impossible to split the Remain vote.”
